Nam Tso, situated 190 km north of
Lhasa is one of the most famous lakes in Tibet . In Tibetan language,
" Nam " means Sky and "Tso" means Lake , and
it is one of the famous pilgrimage lakes in Tibet . Also, Nam Tso
Lake is the sanctuary of many species of migrating birds and other
local birds. Nam Tso is the second largest saltwater lake in China
and Tibet , and is approximately 70km long and 30km wide. The Lake
is easily accessible from Lhasa .
Trekking across the Nyenchen Thanglha Mountains to the pebbled shores
of the holy Nam Tso takes 6 to 7 days. The trek commences and ends
at Damzhung valley, which is situated 160 km north of Lhasa on the
Tibet-Quinghai highway. The spectacular trek calimbs out of the
Damzhung valley via Largen-La (4970 m.) then descends to the mystical
environs of Tashi Do hermitage and the vast Nam Tso. From Tashi
Do, we trek back to Damzhung valley via the remote region of Nyenchen
Thanglha and Kang-La (5150 m.) pass.
The best season for trekking in Nam Tso Lake is late May to Mid-October,
however you must be prepared at all times for wet weather, snow
and cold winds. Nam Tso situated at an altitude of 45980 meters
at the edge of the Chang Tang, Tibet 's vast Northern Plateau. Summer
rain can be quite persistent during the July and August; also snow
fall may block the way at Largen-La some times.
Since the region is very remote, we should carry camping & kitchen
equipment and provision for the entire trekking part. According
to your time frame, we can customize the trekking program from 2
days to 7 days or even more. You can combine Nam Tso lake trek with
Lhasa tour or any other Tibet tour that ends or commences in Lhasa
