A journey to Tibet Everest Base Camp is an extremely
scenic one; we spend 3 days in Lhasa for sightseeing, adjusting to
this ancient culture which allows us enough time to acclimatize. Day
four, we set off for the four day drive to our destination, Tibet
Everest Base Camp (Rongbuk). Our first days drive is particularly
scenic as we follow the Banks of the Yarlung River . After crossing
the River, we climb up to the high pass of Khamba-La where we are
rewarded with the magnificent view of Yamdruk Tso ( Turquoise Lake
). The Lake is the largest fresh water Lake in Tibet it appears almost
serene with the Tibetan Plateau stretching into the distance. After
lunch, we continue over another high pass (Karo-La) before a descent
to Gyantse. We reach Gyantse by evening. Gyantse is a famous ancient
trading hub in Tibet , the following morning we will visit the major
sites before a short drive to Shigatse and overnight. We continue
our journey to Lhatse via Sakya. Situated 21 km off the friendship
highway, Sakya is a beautiful valley settlement where we visit the
famous Monastery before continuing to Lhatse. Lhatse has over the
years become more of a transport town and really of little interest,
however it is necessary to stop here. An early morning start crossing
the Gyatso La pass it takes about 4 hours to reach Xegar (New Tingri).
Here we leave the highway traveling south to Rongbuk, home of the
highest Monastery in the World (overnight). The trek to Base Camp
is along a gentle valley, it takes between 2 and 3 hours with the
north face of Everest looming ever larger. It is not possible to go
directly to the Everest Base Camp as there is a Chinese check post
which only allows authorized climbing groups to enter. After a while
soaking up the atmosphere we return to Rongbuk for a further night
before heading on to Nyalam. The last day is a 2 hour drive to the
border, after completing formalities we travel back to our hotel in
Kathmandu . Lhasa to Everest Base Camp tour
