Our main trip in India runs in Ladakh and Sikkim
areas. Sikkim is extremely beautiful destination tucked between
Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. And Ladakh in the western Himalayas tucked
between Nepal, Pakistan & Xingxang.
Mount Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain
in the world, dominates this small but beautiful land of Sikkim.
This once independent Kingdom was ruled by the
Chogyal dynasty until 1975, when following popular support it became
a state of India. Sikkim has however retained much of its culture
and unique identity.
Containing over 150 lakes it ranges in altitude
from 200 m. to almost 8,000 m. and provides extremely rich bio diversity.
There have been over 600 species of birds recorded here along with
over 4,000 species of flowering plants including a huge variety
of Orchids.
Sachem is rapidly gaining a reputation as a Botanist's
paradise and along with the introduction of eco-tourism, including
serious birding; the region has at last begun to focus on enterprise-based
conservation, which we are keen to support.
Ladakh situated above the Indus River at 12,000ft
and isolated deep within the Karakoram and Zangskar mountain ranges,
providing for the most spectacular and varied mountain scenery in
the world. The upper Indus valley is a dry windswept moonscape.
Known as "Little Tibet," Ladakh has a
rich culture, which still supports numerous active monasteries.
Perched on high cliffs and hilltops, these monasteries appear as
guardians over the starkly beautiful landscape.
